Presence Film

Steven Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills with this innovative paranormal narrative captured wholly from the viewpoint of the phantom. As a family including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their fresh home, the filming device – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of conscious of the supernatural presence, and the entity appears guarding her. But why? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage embraces his eccentric image through this self-referential adventure. He portrays a narcissistic film star playing himself who takes on a million-dollar gig to attend a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by government spies to gather intel on the potential kingpin, his unconventional method comes in handy. October 11th, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

The director's claustrophobic thriller holds up well without requiring a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of child abductions has made the children on edge. When Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and locked up in a basement, he anticipates the worst. However, the disconnected phone in the room keeps ringing, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister could save him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, the Film4 channel

This Dramatic Portrait

In the battle between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. The actor acts as the greedy Jim, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence profiting from the people's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, however Jessica Chastain succeeds to show Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, 1.15am, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This week's another release from Steven Soderbergh is a spy mystery as sharp as the polo necks worn by the actor's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to identify a double agent inside the organization from a group of five – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are experts of calm composure, so a delicious psychological game of truth or lie takes place. The supporting cast join in the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
