EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
