A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
